I remember volunteer iris flowers growing wild on our land when I was a kid growing up. Fun memory to paint tonight...
Martha Lever's poppy class is just waaaay too much fun! She makes it looks so easy and I love hearing a southern accent again. R2 came in while the video was going and said "She sounds just like Grandma did!"
I am having fun using these coneflowers to experiment with different color combinations...
The loose watercolours just weren't getting the love from my kiddos/critics, so here is a compromise daisy. Not too tight, not too loose.
Trying to get the hang of loosening up by doing another Jean Haines demo. Funny how it looked soooo easy in the book, LOL!
I don't believe in coincidences, God has a plan for everything even if we can't see it. I signed up for the MADE ecourse for Christian creatives long before I decided to do 30 in 30. When I decided to do 30 in 30 I didn't plan to choose learning to loosen up as a theme, it just sort of happened. Well, guess what the first theme for MADE is? Free. I decide to free up my watercolours and this pops up. Today I meant to paint a bouquet of flowers. I started splashing on the paint and saw a tree instead. Why not? My painting turned into a tree. Fits today's topic of trust. I didn't plan today, just tossed on some greens, literally blew in a few branches and trusted the process. A drip even started the form of the trunk!
I have a theory about myself and my daily painting/ drawing or lack there of. I am a bit stubborn and easily bored. I seem to be able to stick with a challenge if it is something I am interested in or want to learn. I think that is why I stuck with EDinM the year I decided to learn to draw manga, the EDinM I focused on buildings, Brenda Swensen's 75 Day Direct Ink challenge, and the beginning of this year when I tackled painting people directly in brush pen and chalk on toned paper. It's also why I fizzled out on the last two EDinMs where the subject matter was prechosen for me. I could never really work up the enthusiasm for subjects or challenges I hadn't chosen. I know, a bit spoiled and definitely stubborn but that is how my brain works.
We'll see if my theory holds with this 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge. As I said in previous posts, even though I am a tight painter I loooove the look of loose watercolours. So I am going to try to use this challenge to learn to loosen up. Since this is the opposite of how my brain works, I am starting off by following a few demos. When I first started blogging this is how I started off learning to draw manga. I think it is a classic and wonderfully productive way to learn. After copying a few manga demos (always crediting the sources) I was off and running on my own- now I have my little chibi alter ego scattered throughout my journals and artwork. However, somewhere along the way I ran across the idea that this was frowned upon and not to be posted. Still I think it is a great way to learn, so my painting today is from a demo by Vickie Henderson, http://vickiehendersonsketchbook.blogspot.com/2011/08/coneflowers-wet-in-wet-and-colors-of.html
I confess, I am a tight painter. Loosening up and just letting accidents happen is next to impossible for me. I tried that yesterday and the painting was blah. I am determined to get the hang of painting loose, so today is a rosé study based on a demo by Jean Haines. It is not as loose as I want to be, but it is getting there...
For my birthday my dad sent me a dozen of the loveliest orange/red roses. I know red roses are a classic, but I prefer the more unusual colors. R3 threatened to steal some of my roses and take them up to her room since they smell soooo good. Dad heard about it and today the florist delivered another dozen just for her! I put this off until really late in the day so it is just a quick, loose sketch....
It seems like forever since I last picked up a paintbrush so when I saw the 30 Paintings in 30 Days challenge on Leslie Satea's blog, I decided to jump in. I've got a bit of a late start, but I'm excited to get going. I saw a vintage card with fluffy little bluebirds on it a while back and it inspired today's painting.
Psalm 47:6 Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
I have been avoiding my blog and posting since we returned from our trip. I'm not sure why, maybe it was entropy or maybe I just got burned out posting daily earlier in the year... Anyhooo, here are a couple of pages I started while waiting for tour guides to take us through a pair of lovely old buildings. I finished them at home with pics of the sites. Maybe this will get the ball rolling and I will start posting again.
These were made in a Midori Traveler's Notebook with a craft insert I cut down to fit. The previous post was the same notebook with a Strathmore Aquarius II watercolor paper insert. The kiddos think the notebook is cool and looks like something Indiana Jones would own. I'm still not sure if I like it. Having multiple inserts with different paper is nice, so is being able to refill it. However, the narrow width feels weird and forces me to do full spread, double page layabouts. The Aquarius paper is pretty strange also, it feels thin and almost fuzzy. It is a pretty big change from the Arches watercolor I have been working on.
So much for drawing and posting every day! I got in one last EDinM drawing before we left for a quick combo DH work trip/mini vacation, but we didn't get back and recover before EDinM was over-- bummer. It seems my best intentions cannot compete with the hectic realities of our road trips. I managed to get in a few pages while on the trip, but mostly I just snapped photos to help with journaling later. I came back home from this trip and was so exhausted that I really need a post trip vacation! Here are a few of the pages I did in my journal...
Shorty 7B pencil drawn with a Pilot Croquois 6B. I think I like the shorty lead better, less 'waxy'.
I almost skipped this since today was my RS visit and my eye is achy after the shot, but I haven't missed a daily sketch yet this year so..... Good news from the RS, no retina bleeds and the CNV keeps shrinking so now I get to go 10 weeks until the next shot. For such good news it was a pretty miserable experience at the Doc's today. First I reacted to the fluoroscein dye and got really nauseous ( half dose from now on). Then the lucentis injection was different than the avastin I had before, my IOP spiked and my vision blacked out in the injected eye. Lot of eye pain and a killer headache that luckily faded pretty fast as the pressure normalized. When I got home and looked in the mirror I saw Dr had hit a blood vessel and I will now have a freaky bloody eye for the next few weeks. As if that wasn't enough, my eyelid was majorly swollen. Apparently, I am becoming allergic to the antibiotic drops used for the injection. Gaackkkkk!!!!!! Oh well, it's worth it to keep my sight!!!
R3 used to love her princess room. Now that she is a teen it is too pink and girly. Her room is slowly transforming into a TARDIS blue Dr.Who sanctuary.
Vampires give me the creeps. I mean, come on--- they drink BLOOD! Ewwwwww, gross! Still, if I had to pick a vampire I'd go old school and choose Bela Lugosi. No sparkly vampires for me, LOL!
I bought a pair of antique gaiwan from China and the merchant included this little fish carving for free. It matches the orange and white tea cups and was a kind extra.
My happy, "Life is good", socks. I love the whole Life is good clothing line, it is so positive and fun!!
Draw something that represents joy. My children (and my hubby) are my greatest joy and blessed gifts from God.
Draw something bubbly. We had a bubbler like this on our fish tank when I was a child, before under gravel aerators came into fashion.
Joyfully exploring God's world through the artof watercolor, pen, and ink.
